Gluck talks 'bunkum' says The Times
July 10, 2007
Jane Macquitty, the The Times wine critic, has entered into the debate kicked off by wine writer Malcolm Gluck, who has rubbished claims of an English wine renaissance, saying that comparing English sparkling wines to champagne is "utter poppycock".
Although Jane is wary of suggestions that climate change will be beneficial to English sparkling wine producers, she does agree that the cool climate and chalky soil of southern England is comparable to that in the Champagne region and ideal for the production of good quality sparkling wine.
Jane finishes with her pick of the best, and best value, English wines available, including a Three Choirs white soon to be available from Tesco.
